Student library info ▿The Student library info pertains to the period when Beckett was a student at Trinity College Dublin (1923-1927) and a lecturer at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and TCD (1928-1931). It explains when he is thought to have acquired and read the book in question, based on his inscription, as well as various external sources including the official TCD college calendars, his 'Dream' Notebook, and his letters.Read: by January 1926.
Beckett used this edition published in Milan instead of the "Canzoniere" recommended by the TCD College Calendars.

Beckett uses references to the line 'chi può dir com'egli arde è'n picciol foco', the last line from Petrarch's sonnet CXXXVII of the Canzoniere (probably taken from Montaigne's essay 'De la tristesse'), in Krapp's Last Tape / La Dernière Bande ( MS-HRC-SB-4-2-4, page 6r and MS-HRC-SB-4-2-4, page 7r) and in L'Innommable / The Unnamable ("lueurs ... brûlent" in sentence 129 in Minuit 1953 and "faint fires" in MS-HRC-SB-5-9-1, page 04r).
