POZZO

[1528] With pleasure, with pleasure. [1529] (He fumbles in his pockets.) [1532] What have I done with my spray? [1533] (He fumbles.) [1534] Well now isn't that... [1535] (He looks up, consternation on his features. [1536] Faintly.) [1537] I can't find my pulverizer!

ESTRAGON

[1538] (faintly) [1539] My left lung is very weak! [1540] (He coughs feebly. [1541] In ringing tones.) [1542] But my right lung is as sound as a bell!

POZZO

[1543] (normal voice) [1544] No matter. [1545] What was I saying? [1546] (He ponders.) [1547] Wait. [1548] (Ponders) [1549] Well now isn't that... [1550] (He raises his head.) [1551] Help me!

ESTRAGON

[1552] Wait!

VLADIMIR

[1553] Wait!

POZZO

[1554] Wait!

[1555] All three take off their hats, press their hands to their foreheads, concentrate.

ESTRAGON

[1557] (triumphantly) [1558] Ah!

VLADIMIR

[1559] He has it!

POZZO

[1560] (impatient) [1561] Well?

ESTRAGON

[1562] Why doesn't he put down his bags?

[p. 64v] [p. 65r]

VLADIMIR

[1563] Rubbish!

POZZO

[1564] Are you sure?

VLADIMIR

[1565] Damn it haven't you already told us?

POZZO

[1566] I've already told you?

ESTRAGON

[1567] He's already told us?

VLADIMIR

[1568] Anyway he has put them down.

ESTRAGON

[1569] (glance at Lucky) [1570] x he has. [1571] And what of it?

VLADIMIR

[1572] Since he has put down his bags it is impossible we should have asked why he does not do so.

POZZO

[1573] Stoutly reasoned!

ESTRAGON

[1574] And why has he put them down?

POZZO

[1575] Answer us that.

VLADIMIR

[1576] In order to dance.

ESTRAGON

[1577] True!

POZZO

[1579] True!

[1580] Silence. [1580|001] They put on their hats.

ESTRAGON

[1635] Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful!

VLADIMIR

[1636] (to Pozzo) [1637] Tell him to think.

POZZO

[1638] Give him his hat.

VLADIMIR

[1639] His hat?

POZZO

[1640] He can't think without his hat.

[p. 65v] [p. 66r]

VLADIMIR

[1641] (to Estragon). [1642] Give him his hat.

ESTRAGON

[1643] Me! [1644] After what he did to me! [1645] Never!

VLADIMIR

[1646] I'll give it to him.

[1647] He does not move.

ESTRAGON

[1647|001] (to Pozzo) [1648] Tell him to go and fetch it.

POZZO

[1649] It's better to give it to him.

VLADIMIR

[1650] I'll give it to him.

[1651] He picks up the hat and tenders it at arm's length to Lucky, [1652] who does not move.

POZZO

[1653] You must put it on his head.

ESTRAGON

[1654] (to Pozzo) [1655] Tell him to take it.

POZZO

[1656] It's better to put it on his head.

VLADIMIR

[1657] I'll put it on his head.

[1658] He goes round behind Lucky, approaches him cautiously, puts the hat on his head and recoils smartly. [1659] Lucky does not move. [1660] Silence.

ESTRAGON

[1661] What's he waiting for?

[p. 66v] [p. 67r]

POZZO

[1662] Stand back! [1663] (Vladimir and Estragon move away from Lucky. [1664] Pozzo jerks the rope. [1665] Lucky looks at Pozzo.) [1666] Think pig! [1667] (Pause. [1668] Lucky begins to dance.) [1669] Stop! [1670] (Lucky stops.) [1671] Forward! [1672] (Lucky advances.) [1673] Stop! [1674] (Lucky stops.) [1675] Think!

[1676] Silence

[1686|001] During Lucky's tirade the others react as follows.
[1687] 1) Vladimir and Estragon all attention, Pozzo dejected and disgusted
[1688] 2) Vladimir & Estragon begin to protest, Pozzo's sufferings increase.
[1689] 3) Vladimir & Estragon attentive again, Pozzo more and more agitated and groaning.
[1690] 4) Vladimir & Estragon protest loudly. Pozzo jumps up, pulls on the rope. General outcry. Lucky pulls on the rope, staggers,
