POZZO

[1132] Hurry up, [1133] before he stops.

[1134] (ESTRAGON approaches Lucky and makes to wipe his eyes. [1135] LUCKY kicks him violently in the shins. [1136] ESTRAGON drops the handkerchief, recoils, staggers about the stage howling with pain)

[1137] Handkerchief!

[1138] (LUCKY puts down bag and basket, picks up the handkerchief, gives it to Pozzo, goes back to his place, picks up bag and basket)

ESTRAGON

[1140] The swine! [1141] (he pulls up the leg of his trousers) [1142] He's crippled me!

POZZO

[1143] I told you he didn't like strangers.

VLADIMIR

[1144] (To Estragon) [1145] Show.

[1146] (ESTRAGON shows his leg. [1147] To Pozzo, angrily)

[1148] He's bleeding)

POZZO

[1149] It's a good sign.

ESTRAGON

[1150] (Standing on one leg) [1151] I'll never walk again!

VLADIMIR

[1152] (Tenderly) [1153] I'll carry you. [1154] (pause) [1155] If necessary.

POZZO

[1156] He's stopped crying. [1157] (to Estragon) [1158] You have replaced him as it were. [1159] (Lyrically) [1160] The tears of the world are a constant quantity. [1161] For each one who begins to weep, somewhere else another stops. [1162] The same is true of the laugh. [1163] (he laughs) [1164] Let us not then speak ill of our epoch, it is not any unhappier than its predecessors. [1165] (Silence) [1166] Let us not speak well of it either. [1167] (Silence) [1168] Let us not speak of it at all. [1169] (Silence) [1170] It is true that the population has increased.

VLADIMIR

[1171] Try and walk.

[1172] (ESTRAGON takes a few limping steps, stops before Lucky and spits on him, then goes and sits down on the mound)

POZZO

[1173] Guess who taught me all these beautiful things. [1174] (Pause. [1175] Pointing to Lucky) [1176] My Lucky!

VLADIMIR

[1177] (Looking at the sky) [1178] Will night never come?

POZZO

[1179] But for him all my thoughts, all my feelings, would have been of common things. [1179|001] (Pause. [1179|002] With

[p. 29r]

POZZO

[1179|002] extraordinary vehemence) [1179|003] Professional worries! [1179|004] (Calmer) [1180] Beauty, grace, truth of the first water, I knew they were all beyond me. [1181] So I took a knook.

VLADIMIR

[1182] (Startled from his inspection of the sky) [1183] A knook?

POZZO

[1184] That was nearly sixty years ago...(he consults his watch) ...yes, nearly sixty. [1185] (Drawing himself up proudly) [1186] You wouldn't think it to look at me, would you?

[1187] (VLADIMIR looks at Lucky)

[1188] Compared to him I look like a young man, no? [1189] (Pause) [1191] Hat!

[1192] (LUCKY puts down the basket and takes off his hat. [1193] His long white hair falls about his face. [1194] He puts his hat under his arm and picks up the basket)

[1195] Now look.

[1196] (POZZO takes off his hat(1) [1198] He is completely bald. [1199] He puts on his hat again)

[1200] Did you see?

VLADIMIR

[1207] And now you turn him away? [1208] Such an old and faithful servant.

ESTRAGON

[1209] Son of a bitch!

[1210] (POZZO more and more agitated)

VLADIMIR

[1211] After having sucked all the good out of him you chuck him away like a...like a banana skin. [1212] Really...

POZZO

[1213] (Groaning, clutching his head) [1214] I can't bear it..any longer...the way he goes on...you've no idea...it's terrible...he must go... (he brandishes his arms) ...I'm going mad... [1215] (he collapses, his head in his hands) ... [1216] I can't bear it...any longer...

[1217] (Silence. [1218] All look at Pozzo. [1219] LUCKY shudders)

VLADIMIR

[1220] He can't bear it.

ESTRAGON

[1221] Any longer.

VLADIMIR

[1222] He's going mad.

ESTRAGON

[1223] It's terrible.

VLADIMIR

[1224] (To Lucky) [1225] How dare you! [1226] It's abominable! [1227] Such

[p. 30r]

VLADIMIR
(Contd.)

[1227] a good master! [1228] Crucify him like that! [1229] After so many years! [1230] Really!

POZZO

[1231] (Sobbing) [1232] He used to be so kind...so helpful...and entertaining...my good angel...and now...he's killing me!

[1197] (1) all four wear bowlers.

ESTRAGON

[1233] (To Vladimir) [1234] Does he want to replace him?

VLADIMIR

[1235] What?

ESTRAGON

[1236] Does he want someone to take his place or does he not, that's what I want to know.

VLADIMIR

[1237] I don't think so.

ESTRAGON

[1238] What?

VLADIMIR

[1239] I don't know.

ESTRAGON

[1240] Ask him.

POZZO

[1241] (Calmer) [1242] Gentlemen, I don't know what came over me. [1243] Forgive me. [1244] Forget all I said. [1245] (more and more his old self) [1246] I don't remember exactly what it was, but you may be sure there wasn't a word of truth in it. [1247] (drawing himself up, striking his chest) [1248] Do I look like a man that can be made to suffer? [1249] Frankly? [1250] (he rummages in his pockets) [1251] What have I done with my pipe?

VLADIMIR

[1252] Charming evening we're having.

ESTRAGON

[1253] Unforgettable.

VLADIMIR

[1254] And it's not over.

ESTRAGON

[1255] Apparently not.

VLADIMIR

[1256] It's only beginning.

ESTRAGON

[1257] It's appalling.

VLADIMIR

[1258] It's worse than being at the theatre.

ESTRAGON

[1258|001] At the circus.

VLADIMIR

[1259] At the music-hall.

ESTRAGON

[1259|001] At the circus.

POZZO

[1263] What can I have done with that briar?

[p. 31r]

ESTRAGON

[1264] He's a scream. [1265] He's lost his dudeen. [1266] (laughs noisily)

VLADIMIR

[1267] I'll be back. [1268] (he goes towards the wings)

ESTRAGON

[1269] At the end of the corridor, on the left.

VLADIMIR

[1270] Keep my seat. [1271] (Exit)

POZZO

[1272] I've lost my Kapp and Peterson!

ESTRAGON

[1273] (Convulsed with merriment) [1274] He'll be the death of me!

POZZO

[1275] (Looking up) [1276] You didn't by any chance see - [1277] (he remarks the absence of Vladimir) [1279] Oh! [1280] He's gone! [1281] Without saying goodbye! [1282] How could he! [1283] He might have waited!

ESTRAGON

[1284] He couldn't.

POZZO

[1285] Oh! [1286] (pause) [1287] Oh well then of course in that case...

ESTRAGON

[1288] Come here.

POZZO

[1289] What for?

ESTRAGON

[1290] You'll see.

POZZO

[1291] You want me to get up?

ESTRAGON

[1292] Quick!

[1293] (POZZO gets up and goes over to Estragon)

[1294] Look!

POZZO

[1294|001] (Having put on his glasses) [1295] Oh I say!

ESTRAGON

[1296] It's all over.

[1297] (Enter VLADIMIR, sombre. He shoulders Lucky

[p. 32r]

[1297] out of his way, kicks over the stool, comes and goes agitatedly)

POZZO

[1298] He's not pleased.

ESTRAGON

[1298|001] (To Vladimir) [1299] You missed a treat. [1300] Pity.

[1301] (VLADIMIR halts, straightens the stool, comes and goes, calmer)

POZZO

[1302] He subsides. [1303] (looking round) [1304] All subsides. [1305] A great calm descends. [1306] Listen! [1307] (he raises his hand) [1308] Pan sleeps.

VLADIMIR

[1310] Will night never come?

[1311] (All three look at the sky)

POZZO

[1312] You don't feel like going until it does?

ESTRAGON

[1313] Well you see -

POZZO

[1314] Why it's very natural, very natural. [1315] I myself in your situation, if I had an appointment with a Godin...Godet...Godot...anyway you see who I mean, I'd wait till it was black night before I'd give up. [1316] (he looks at the stool) [1317] I'd like very much to sit down, but I don't quite know how to set about it.

ESTRAGON

[1318] Could I be of any help?

POZZO

[1319] If you asked me perhaps.

ESTRAGON

[1320] What?

POZZO

[1321] If you asked me to sit down.

ESTRAGON

[1322] Would that be a help?

POZZO

[1323] I imagine so.

ESTRAGON

[1324] Here we go. [1325] Be seated, Sir, I beg of you.

POZZO

[1326] No no, I must be going. [1327] (Pause. [1328] Aside) [1329] Insist a little!

ESTRAGON

[1330] Come come, take a seat, I beseech you, you'll get pneumonia.

POZZO

[1331] You really think so?

ESTRAGON

[1332] Why it's absolutely certain.

POZZO

[1333] You may be right. [1334] (he sits down) [1335] Thank you, dear
