ESTRAGON

[3445] Exactly!

VLADIMIR

[3446] The two of you slipped. [3446|001] (pause) [3446|002] And fell.

POZZO

[3447] Go and see is he hurt.

VLADIMIR

[3448] But we can't leave you.

POZZO

[3449] You needn't both go.

VLADIMIR

[3450] (To Estragon) [3451] You go.

ESTRAGON

[3451|001] After what he did to me? [3451|002] Never!

POZZO

[3452] Yes yes, let your friend go, [3453] he stinks so. [3479] What is he waiting for?

[]

Vl:

[3481] What are you waiting for?

Es:

[3482] I'm waiting for Godot.

[3482|001] (Silence)

VLADIMIR

[3488] What exactly should he do?

POZZO

[3489] Well to begin with he should pull on the rope, as hard as he likes so long as he doesn't strangle him. [3490] He usually responds to that. [3491] If not he should give him a taste of his boot, in the face and the privates guts as far as possible.

VLADIMIR

[3492] (To Estragon) [3493] You see, you've nothing to be afraid of. [3494] It's even an opportunity to revenge yourself.

ESTRAGON

[3495] And if he defends himself?

POZZO

[3496] No no, he never defends himself.

VLADIMIR

[3497] I'll come flying to the rescue.

ESTRAGON

[3498] Don't take your eyes off me. [3499] (he goes towards Lucky)

VLADIMIR

[3500] Make sure he's alive before you start. [3501] No point in exerting yourself if he's dead.

ESTRAGON

[3502] (Bending over Lucky) [3503] He's breathing.

VLADIMIR

[3504] Then let him have it.

[3505] (With sudden fury ESTRAGON starts kicking Lucky, hurling abuse at him as he does so. [3506] But he hurts his foot and moves away, limping and groaning. [3507] LUCKY stirs)

ESTRAGON

[3509] Oh the brute! [3510] (he sits down on the mound and tries to take off his boots.[3511] But he soon desists and disposes himself for sleep, his arms on his knees and his head on his arms)

POZZO

[3512] What's gone wrong now?

[p. 93r]

VLADIMIR

[3513] My friend has hurt himself.

POZZO

[3514] And Lucky?

VLADIMIR

[3515] So it is he?

POZZO

[3516] What?

VLADIMIR

[3517] It is Lucky?

POZZO

[3518] I don't understand.

VLADIMIR

[3519] And you are Pozzo?

POZZO

[3520] Certainly I am Pozzo.

VLADIMIR

[3521] The same as yesterday?

POZZO

[3522] Yesterday?

VLADIMIR

[3523] We met yesterday. [3524] (silence) [3525] Do you not remember?

POZZO

[3526] I don't remember having met anyone yesterday. [3527] But to-morrow I won't remember having met anyone to-day. [3528] So don't count on me to enlighten you.

VLADIMIR

[3528|001] But -

POZZO

[3529] That's enough. Up pig!

VLADIMIR

[3530] You were bringing him to the fair to sell him. [3531] You spoke to us. [3532] He danced. [3533] He thought. [3534] You had your sight.

POZZO

[3535] As you please. [3536] Let me go.

[3537] (VLADIMIR moves aside)

[3538] Up!

[3540] (LUCKY gets up, gathers up his burdens)
Wait till below him
X to stone

VLADIMIR

[3542] Where do you go from here?

POZZO

[3543] I don't concern myself with that.

[3545] (Lucky, laden down, takes his place before Pozzo)

[3546] Whip!

[3547] (LUCKY puts everything down, looks for the whip, finds it, puts it into Pozzo's hand, takes up everything again)

[p. 94r]

POZZO
(Contd.)

[3548] Rope!

[3549] (LUCKY puts everything down, puts end of the rope into Pozzo's hand, takes up everything again) On his xxx

VLADIMIR

[3550] What is there in the bag?

POZZO

[3551] Sand. [3552] (he jerks the rope) [3553] March!

VLADIMIR

[3574] Don't go yet!

POZZO

[3575] I'm going.

VLADIMIR

[3576] What do you do when you fall far from help?

POZZO

[3577] We wait till we can get up. [3578] Then we go on. [3578|001] March On!!

VLADIMIR

[3579] Before you go, tell him to sing! X to R

POZZO

[3580] Who?

VLADIMIR

[3581] Lucky.

POZZO

[3582] To sing?

VLADIMIR

[3583] Yes. [3584] Or to think. [3585] Or to recite.

POZZO

[3586] But he's dumb.

VLADIMIR

[3587] Dumb!

POZZO

[3588] Dumb. [3589] He can't even groan.

VLADIMIR

[3590] Dumb! [3591] Since when?

POZZO

[3592] (Suddenly furious) [3593] Have you not done tormenting me with your accursed time? [3594] It's insensate abominable! [3595] When! [3596] When! [3597] One day, is that not enough for you, one day like any other day, one day he went dumb, one day I went blind, one day we'll go deaf, one day we were born, one day we'll die, the same day, the same second, is that not enough for you? [3598] (calmer) [3599] They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night again once more. [3600] (he jerks the rope) [3601] March! On!

[3602] (Exeunt LUCKY and POZZO. [3603] VLADIMIR follows them to the edge of the stage, looks after them. [3604] The noise of a fall, reinforced by mimic of Vladimir, announces that they are down again. [3605] Silence. [3606] VLADIMIR goes towards ESTRAGON who is asleep, contemplates him a moment, then shakes him awake) X by himto tree

[p. 95r]

ESTRAGON

[3607] (Wild gestures, incoherent words. [3608] Finally) [3609] Why will you never let me sleep?

VLADIMIR

[3610] I felt lonely. X to barrel

ESTRAGON

[3611] I was dreaming I was happy.

VLADIMIR

[3612] That passed the time.

ESTRAGON

[3613] I was dreaming that -

VLADIMIR

[3614] Don't tell me! [3615] (silence) Sit [3616] I wonder is he really blind.

ESTRAGON

[3617] Who?

VLADIMIR

[3620] Pozzo.

ESTRAGON

[3621] Blind?

VLADIMIR

[3622] He told us he was blind?

ESTRAGON

[3623] Well what about it?

VLADIMIR

[3624] It seemed to me he could see us.

ESTRAGON

[3625] You dreamt it. [3626] (pause) [3627] Let's go. [3628] We can't. [3629] Ah! [3630] (pause) [3631] Are you sure it wasn't him?

VLADIMIR

[3632] Who?

ESTRAGON

[3633] Godot.

VLADIMIR

[3634] But who?

ESTRAGON

[3635] Pozzo.

VLADIMIR

[3636] Not at all! [3637] Not at all! [3638] (pause) [3639] Not at all.

ESTRAGON

[3640] I suppose I might as well get up. [3641] (he gets up painfully) [3642] Ow! [3642|001] Didi!

VLADIMIR

[3643] I don't know what to think any more.

ESTRAGON

[3644] My feet! [3645] (he sits down, tries to take off his boots) [3646] Help me!

VLADIMIR

[3647] Was I sleeping, while the others suffered? [3648] Am I sleeping now? [3649] To-morrow, when I wake, or think I do, what shall I say of to-day? [3650] That with Estragon my friend, at this place, until the fall of night, I waited for Godot? [3651] That Pozzo passed, with his carrier, and talked to us? [3652] Probably. [3653] But in all that what truth will there be?
