Hamm

[2200] Have you the glass.

Clov

[2201] No. [2202] It's clear enough as it is.

Hamm

[2203] Go and get it.

[2204] Pause. [2205] Clov throws up his eyes, brandishes his fists. [2206] He loses balance, clutches on to the ladder. [2207] He starts to get down, stops.

Clov

[2208] There's one thing I'll never understand. [2209] (He gets down.) [2210] Why I always obey Why I always obey you. [2211] Can you explain that to me?

Hamm

[2212] No... [2213] Perhaps it's pity compassion. [2214] (Pause.) [2215] A kind of grand great compassion. [2216] (Pause.) [2217] Oh you won't find it easy, you won't find it easy.

[2218] Pause. [2219] Clov begins to move about the room, [2220] looking searching for the glass.

Clov

[2221] I'm tired of our goings-on, very tired. [2222] (He searches.) [2223] You're not sitting on it?

[2224] He moves the chair, looks at the place where it stood, goes on searching. Resumes his search

Hamm

[2225] (anguished) [2226] Don't leave me there! [2227] (Angrily Clov puts the chair back in its place, goes on searching. [2228] Feebly.) [2229] Am I right in the centre?

Clov

[2230] You'd need a microscope to find this - [2231] (He sees the glass.) [2232] Ah! About time!

[2233] He picks up the glass, goes to the ladder,

[p. 69v] [p. 70r]

[2233] gets up on it, turns the glass on the without.

Hamm

[2234] Give me the dog.

Clov

[2235] (looking) [2236] Quiet!

Hamm

[2237] (angrily) [2238] Give me the dog!

[2239] Clov drops the glass, clasps his hands to his head. [2240] Pause. [2241] He gets down precipitately, looks for the dog, finds it, picks it up, hastens towards Hamm and strikes him violently on the head with the dog.

Clov

[2242] There's your dog for you!

[2243] The dog falls to the ground. [2244] Pause.

Hamm

[2245] He struck me!

Clov

[2246] You drive me mad, I'm mad!

Hamm

[2247] If you must strike me, strike me with the xxx sledge hammer axe. [2248] (Pause.) [2249] Or with the gaffe , strike me the gaffe . [2250] Not with the dog. [2251] With the gaffe . [2252] Or with the sledge hammer. axe.

[2253] Clov picks up the dog and gives it to Hamm who takes it in his arms.

Clov

[2254] (imploring) [2255] Let's xx stop play-acting!

Hamm

[2256] Never! [2257] (Pause.) [2258] Put me in my coffin.

Clov

[2259] There are no more coffins.

Hamm

[2260] Then let there be an end! [2261] (Clov goes towards the ladder. [2262] Violently.)

[p. 70v] [p. 71r]

[2263] With a bang! [2264] (Clov gets up on the ladder, gets down again, looks for the glass, p finds it, picks it up, gets up on the ladder, raises the glass.) [2265] Of darkness! [2266] And me? [2267] Did anyone ever forgive me?

Clov

[2268] (lowering the glass, turning towards Hamm) [2269] What? [2270] (Pause.) [2271] Is it me you're referring to?

Hamm

[2272] (angrily) [2273] An aside, [2274] fool ape! [2275] Did you never hear an aside before? [2276] (Pause.) [2277] I'm warming up to my last soliloquy

Clov

[2278] I warn you. [2279] I'm going to look at this filth since you insist. [2280] But it's the last time. [2281] (He xxx xxx turns the glass on the without) [2282] Let's see. [2283] (He moves the glass.) [2284] Nothing..... nothing... good... good... nothing... goo - [2285] (He starts, lowers the glass, examines it, turns it again on the without. [2286] Pause) [2287] Bad luck to it!

Hamm

[2288] More complications! [2289] (Clov gets down.) [2290] Not an underplot, I hope.

[2291] Clov moves the ladder nearer the window, gets up on it, turns the glass on the without. [2292] Pause. [2292|001] dismayed.

Clov.

[2321] (dismayed) [2322] Looks like a small boy.

Hamm

[2322|001] (sarcastic) [2322|002] A small... boy!

Clov

[2351] I'll go and see. [2352] (He gets down,

[p. 71v]

DOODLE 64

[p. 72r]

[2352] drops the glass, goes towards the door, halts turns.) [2353] I'll take the gaffe .

[2354] He looks for the gaffe , sees it, picks it up, goes towards the door.

Hamm

[2355] You needn't bother. No!

[2356] Clov halts

Clov

[2357] Needn't bother? [2358] A potential procreator?

Hamm

[2359] If he exists he'll come here or he'll die there. [2360] And if he doesn't exist you needn't bother.

[2361] Pause

Clov

[2362] You don't believe me? [2363] You think I'm making it up?

[2364] Pause

Hamm

[2365] It's the end, Clov, we've come to the end. [2366] I don't need you any more.

[2367] Pause.

Clov

[2368] Lucky for you.

[2369] He goes towards the door.

Hamm

[2370] Leave me the gaffe .

[2371] Clov gives him the gaffe , goes towards the door, halts, looks at the alarm-clock, takes it down, looks round for a better place to put it, goes to the bins, puts it on lid of Nagg's bin. [2372] Pause.

[p. 72v] [p. 73r]

Clov

[2373] I'm going (I'll leave you now).

[2374] He goes towards the door

Hamm

[2375] Before you go... (Clov halts near the door)... say something.

Clov

[2376] There's nothing to say.

Hamm

[2377] A few words... that I can ponder on... in my heart.

Clov

[2378] Your heart!

Hamm

[2379] Yes. [2380] (Pause. [2381] Forcibly.) [2382] Yes! [2383] (Pause) [2384] With the rest, in the end, the shades the shadows, the murmurs, all the difficulty trouble, to end up with. [2385] (Pause.) [2386] Clov... [2387] (Pause.) [2388] He never talked to me. [2389] Then, at the end, before he went, without my asking him, he talked to me. [2390] He said...

Clov

[2391] (despairingly) [2392] Ah...!

Hamm

[2393] Something... from your heart.

Clov

[2394] My heart!

Hamm

[2395] A few words... from your heart.

[2395|001] Pause

Clov

[2396] (sings)
