ESTRAGON

[2570] But mine were too tight.

VLADIMIR

[2571] For you. [2572] Not for him.

ESTRAGON

[2573] I'm tired! [2574] (pause) [2575] Let's go.

VLADIMIR

[2576] We can't.

ESTRAGON

[2577] Why not?

VLADIMIR

[2578] We're waiting for Godot.

ESTRAGON

[2579] Ah! [2580] (Pause. [2580|001] Despairing) [2581] What'll we do, what'll we do!

VLADIMIR

[2582] There's nothing we can do.

ESTRAGON

[2583] But I can't go on like this.

VLADIMIR

[2584] Would you like a radish? X to him.

ESTRAGON

[2585] Is that all there is?

VLADIMIR

[2586] There are radishes and turnips.

ESTRAGON

[2587] Are there no carrots?

VLADIMIR

[2588] No. [2589] Anyway you overdo it with your carrots.

ESTRAGON

[2590] Then give me a radish.

[2591] (VLADIMIR fumbles in his pockets, finds nothing but turnips; finally brings out a radish and hands it to ESTRAGON who examines it, sniffs it)

[2592] It's black!

VLADIMIR

[2593] It's a radish.

ESTRAGON

[2594] I only like the pink ones, you know that!

VLADIMIR

[2595] Then you don't want it?

ESTRAGON

[2596] I only like the pink ones!

VLADIMIR

[2597] Then give it back to me.

[2598] (ESTRAGON gives it back) Angry him xxx

ESTRAGON

[2599] I'll go and get a carrot. [2600] (he does not move) Angry

VLADIMIR

[2601] This is becoming really insignificant.

ESTRAGON

[2602] Not enough.

[p. 69r]

[2603] (Silence) Stay L in

VLADIMIR

[2604] What about trying them?

ESTRAGON

[2605] I've tried everything.

VLADIMIR

[2606] No, I mean the boots.

ESTRAGON

[2607] Would that be a good thing?

VLADIMIR

[2608] It'd pass the time.

[2609] (ESTRAGON hesitates)

[2610] I assure you, it'd be an occupation.

ESTRAGON

[2611] A relaxation.

VLADIMIR

[2612] A recreation.

ESTRAGON

[2613] A relaxation.

VLADIMIR

[2614] Try.

ESTRAGON

[2615] You'll help me?

VLADIMIR

[2616] I will of course.

ESTRAGON

[2617] We don't manage too badly, eh Didi, between the two of us?

VLADIMIR

[2618] Yes yes. [2619] Come on, we'll try the left first.

ESTRAGON

[2620] We always find something, eh Didi, to give us the impression we exist?

VLADIMIR

[2621] (Impatiently) [2622] Yes yes, we're magicians. [2623] But let us persevere in what we have resolved, before we forget. [2624] (he picks up a boot) [2625] Come on, give me your foot.

[2626] (ESTRAGON raises his right foot)

[2627] The other, hog!

[2628] (ESTRAGON raises the other foot)

[2629] Higher!

[2630] (Wreathed together they stagger about the stage. [2631] VLADIMIR succeeds finally in putting on the boot)

[2632] Try and walk.

[p. 70r]

VLADIMIR
(Contd.)

[2633] (ESTRAGON walks)

[2634] Well?

ESTRAGON

[2635] It fits.

VLADIMIR

[2636] (Taking string from his pocket) [2637] We'll try and lace it.

ESTRAGON

[2638] (Vehemently) [2639] No no, no laces, no laces!

VLADIMIR

[2640] You'll be sorry. [2641] Let's try the other. [2642] (As before) [2643] Well? [2643|001] Try & walk. [2643] Well?

ESTRAGON

[2644] It fits too. [2644|001] (Pick up boot)

VLADIMIR

[2645] They don't hurt you? Clean

ESTRAGON

[2647] Not yet.

VLADIMIR

[2648] Then you can keep them.

ESTRAGON

[2649] They're too big.

VLADIMIR

[2650] Perhaps you'll have socks some day.

ESTRAGON

[2651] True.

VLADIMIR

[2652] Then You'll keep them then?

ESTRAGON

[2653] That's enough about these boots.

VLADIMIR

[2654] Yes, but -

ESTRAGON

[2654|001] (Violently) [2655] Enough!

[2656] (Silence) xxx X P

[2657] I suppose I might as well sit down. [2658] (he looks round for a place to sit down, then goes and sits down on the mound)

VLADIMIR

[2659] That's where you were sitting yesterday evening.

ESTRAGON

[2661] If I could only sleep.

VLADIMIR

[2662] Yesterday you slept.

ESTRAGON

[2663] I'll try. [2664] (he resumes his foetal posture, his head between his knees)

VLADIMIR

[2665] Wait. [2666] (he goes over and sits down beside Estragon and begins to sing in a loud voice) [2667] Bye bye bye bye
Bye bye -

[p. 71r]

ESTRAGON

[2668] (Looking up angrily) [2669] Not so loud!

VLADIMIR

[2670] (Softly)
[2671] Bye bye bye bye
Bye bye bye bye
Bye bye bye bye
Bye bye...

[2672] (ESTRAGON sleeps. [2673] VLADIMIR gets up softly, takes off his coat and lays it across Estragon's shoulders, then starts walking up and down, swinging his arms to warm himself. [2674] ESTRAGON wakes with a start, gets up, casts about wildly. [2675] VLADIMIR runs to him, puts his arms round him)

VLADIMIR

[2683] Don't tell me! [2684] Come, we'll walk it off.

[2685] (He takes ESTRAGON by the arm and walks him up and down until ESTRAGON refuses to go any further)

ESTRAGON

[2686] That's enough. [2687] I'm tired.

VLADIMIR

[2688] You'd rather be stuck there doing nothing?

ESTRAGON

[2689] Yes.

VLADIMIR

[2690] Please yourself. take coat xxx [2691] (he releases Estragon, picks up his coat and puts it on)

ESTRAGON

[2692] Let's go.

VLADIMIR

[2693] We can't.

ESTRAGON

[2694] Why not?

VLADIMIR

[2695] We're waiting for Godot.

ESTRAGON

[2696] Ah!

[2697] (VLADIMIR walks up and down)

ESTRAGON
(Contd.)

[2698] Can you not stay still?

VLADIMIR

[2699] I'm cold.

ESTRAGON

[2700] We came too early.

VLADIMIR

[2701] It's always at nightfall.

ESTRAGON

[2702] But night doesn't fall.

VLADIMIR

[2703] It'll fall all of a sudden, like yesterday.

ESTRAGON

[2704] Then it'll be night.

VLADIMIR

[2705] And we can go. xxx

ESTRAGON

[2706] Then it'll be day again. [2707] (pause. [2707|001] Despairing) [2708] What'll we do, what'll we do!

VLADIMIR

[2709] (Halting, violently) [2710] Will you stop whining! [2711] I've had about my bellyful of your lamentations!

ESTRAGON

[2712] I'm going.

VLADIMIR

[2713] (Seeing Lucky's hat) X up over him [2714] Well!

ESTRAGON

[2715] Goodbye.

VLADIMIR

[2716] Lucky's hat. [2717] (he goes towards it) [2718] I've been here an hour and never saw it. [2719] (very pleased) [2720] Fine!
X to his R on ramp

ESTRAGON

[2721] You'll never see me again.

VLADIMIR

[2722] I knew it was the right place. [2723] Now our troubles are over. [2724] (he picks up the hat, contemplates it, straightens it) [2725] Must have been a very handsome hat. [2726] (he puts it on in place of his own which he hands to Estragon) [2727] Here.

ESTRAGON

[2728] What?

VLADIMIR

[2729] Hold that.
