Hamm

[2083] (soft). [2084] What'll I do? [2085] (Pause. [2086] In a howl.) [2087] What'll I do!? [2088] (Clov sees the picture, takes it down, stands it on the floor with its face tio the wall, hangs up the a alarm-clock in its place.) [2089] What are you doing?

Clov

[2089|001] What remains to be done. [2089|002] Lingering. [2090] Winding up.

Hamm

[2092] Look at the land. earth.

Clov

[2093] Again?

Hamm

[2094] Since it's calling to you.

Clov

[2095] Is your throat hurting you? [2096] (Pause.) [2097] Would you like a jujube lozenge? [2098] (Pause.) [2099] No? [2100] (Pause.) [2101] Pity.

[2102] Clov goes, humming, towards window right, halts before it, looks up at it.

Hamm

[2103] Don't sing.

Clov

[2104] (turning towards Hamm). [2105] One hasn't the right to sing any more?

Hamm

[2106] No.

Clov

[2107] Then how can it end?

Hamm

[2108] You want it to end?

Clov

[2109] I want to sing.

Hamm

[2110] I can't prevent you.

[2111] Pause. [2112] Clov turns towards the window.

Clov

[2113] What did I do with that ladder? [2114] (He looks round for it.) [2115] You didn't see that ladder? [2116] (He sees it.) [2117] Ah, about time. [2117|001] I knew it was I saw it somewhere. [2118] (He goes towards window left.) [2119] Sometimes I wonder if I'm in my roight mind. [2120] Then it passes over and i'm as lucid as before. [2121] (He gets up on ladder, looks out of window.) [2122] Mother of God, [2123] she's under water! [2124] (He looks.) [2125] How can that be? [2126] (He pokes forward his head, his hand above his eyes.) [2127] It hasn't rained. [2128] (He wipes the pane, looks. [2129] Pause.) [2131] Ah what a fool I am! [2132] It's I'm on the wrong the wrong side. [2133] (He gets down, takes a few paces towards window right.) [2134] Under water! [2135] (He goes back for the ladder.) [2136] What a fool I am! [2137] (He drags ladder towards window right.) [2138] Sometimes I wonder if I'm in my right senses. [2139] Then it passes off and I'm as intelligent as ever. [2140] (He sets down ladder under window right, gets up on it, looks out of window. [2141] He turns towards Hamm.) [2142] Any particular sector you're interested in? fancy [2144] Or merely the whole thing lot?

Hamm

[2146] Whole thing.

Clov

[2147] The general effect? [2148] (Pause. [2149] He turns towards window.) [2150] Let's see.

[2151] He looks.

Hamm

[2152] Clov.

[p. 37r]

Clov

[2153] (absorbed). [2154] Mmm.

Hamm

[2155] Do you know what it is?

Clov

[2156] '(as before). [2157] Mmm.

Hamm

[2158] OI was never there. [2159] (Pause.) [2160] Clov!

Clov

[2161] (turning towards Hamm, exasperated). [2162] What is it?

Hamm

[2163] I was never there.

Clov

[2164] Lucky for you.

[2165] He turns towards window.

Hamm

[2166] Absent, always. [2167] It [xx] all happened without me. [2168] I don't know what's happened. [2169] (Pause.) [2170] Do you know what's happened? [2171] (Pause.) [2172] Clov!

Clov

[2173] (turning towards Hamm, exasperated). [2174] Do you want me to look at this muckheap, yes or no?

Hamm

[2175] Answer me first.

Clov

[2176] What?

Hamm

[2177] Do you know what's happened?

Clov

[2178] When? [2179] Where?

Hamm

[2180] (violently). [2181] When! [2182] What's happened! [2183] Do you not understand? [2184] What has happened?

Clov

[2185] What the hell does it matter?

[2186] He turns towards the window.

Hamm

[2187] I don't know.

[2188] Pause. [2189] Clov turns towards Hamm.

Clov

[2190] (harshly). [2191] When old Mother Pegg asked you for oil for her lamp and you sent her packing told her to go hell , you knew what was happening then, no? [2192] (Pause.) [2193] You know what she died of, Mother Pegg? [2194] Of darkness.

Hamm

[2195] (feebly). [2196] I hadn't any.

Clov

[2197] (as before). [2198] Yes, you ahad.

[2199] Pause.

Hamm

[2200] Have you the glass?

Clov

[2201] No, [2202] it's clear enough as it is.

Hamm

[2203] Go and get it.

[2204] Pause. [2205] Clov throws up his eyes, brandishes his fists?. [2206] He loses balance, clutches on to the mladder. [2207] He starts to get down, halts.

Clov

[2208] There's one thing I'll never understand. [2209] (He gets down.)

[p. 38r]

[2210] Why I always obey you. [2211] Can you explain that to me?

Hamm

[2212] No...[2213]Perhaps it's compassion. [2214] (Pause.) [2215] A kind of great compassion. [2216] (Pause.) [2217] Oh you won't find it easy, you won't find it easy.

[2218] Pause. [2219] Clov begins to move about the room, looking for searching in search of the glass.

Clov

[2221] I'l tired of our goin[x]gs on, very tired. [2222] (He searches.) [2223] You're not sitting on it?

[2224] He moves the chair, looks at the place where it stood, resumes his search.

Hamm

[2225] (anguished). [2226] Don't leave me there! [2227] (Angrily Clov puts the chair back in its place.) [2229] Am I right in the centre?

Clov

[2230] You'd need a microscope to find this - [2231] (He sees the glass.) [2232] Abo Ah, about time I knew it was I saw it somewhere.

[2233] He picks up the glass, goes to the ladder, hgets up on it, turns the glass on the without.

Hamm

[2234] Give me the dog.

Clov

[2235] (looking). [2236] Quiet!

Hamm

[2237] (angrily). [2238] Give me the dog!

[2239] Clov drops the glass, clasps his hands to his head. [2240] Pause. [2241] He gets down precipitately, looks for the dog, sees it, picks it up, hastens towrads Hamm and strikes him violently on the head with the dog.

Clov

[2242] There's your dog for you!

[2243] The dog falls to the ground. [2244] Pause.

Hamm

[2245] He struck hit me!

Clov

[2246] You drive me mad, I'm mad!

Hamm

[2247] If you must strike hit me, strike hit me with the axe. [2248] (Pause.) [2249] Or with the gaff, strike hit mew with the gaff. [2250] Noyt with the dog. [2251] With the gaff. [2252] Or with the axe.

[2253] Clov picks up the dog and gives it to Hamm who takes it in his arms.

Clov

[2254] (imploring). [2255] Let's stop playing!

Hamm

[2256] Never! [2257] (Pause.) [2258] Put me in my coffin.

XClov

[2259] There are no more coffins.

Hamm

[2260] Then let there be an end! [2261] (Clov goes towards ladder. [2262] Violently.) [2263] With a bang! [2264] (Clov gets up on ladder, gets down again, looks for glass, sees it, p^ picks it up, gets up on ladder, raises glass.) [2265] Of darkness! [2266] And me? [2267] Did anyone ever have pity on me?

[p. 39r]

Clov

[2268] (lowering the glass, turning towards Hamm). [2269] What? [2270] (Pause.) [2271] Is it me you're referring to?

Hamm

[2272] (angrily). [2273] An aside, [2274] ape! [2275] Did you never hear an asoide before? [2276] (Pause.) [2277] I'm warming up for my last soliloquy.

Clov

[2278] I warn you. [2279] I'm going to have a look at this filth since you insist it's an order.. [2280] But it's the last time. [2281] (He turns the glass on the without.) [2282] Let(s see. [2283] (He moves the glass.) [2284] Nothing..nothing...good...good...nothing...goo - [2285] (He starts, lowers the glass, examines it, turns it again on the without. [2286] Pause.) [2287] Bad luck to it!

Hamm

[2288] More complications! [2289] (Clov gets down.) [2290] Not an underplot, I hope.

[2291] Clov moves ladder nearer window, gets up on it, turns glass on without. [2292] Pause.

Clov

[2321] (dismayed). [2322] Looks like a small boy!

Hamm

[2322|001] (sarcastic). [2322|002] A small...boy!

Clov

[2351] I'll go and see. [2352] (He gets down, drops the glass, goes towards the door, turns.) [2353] I'll take the gaff.

[2354] He looks for the gaff, sees it, picks it up, hastens towards door.

Hamm

[2355] No!

[2356] Clov halts.

Clov

[2357] No? [2358] A potential procreator?

Hamm

[2359] If he exists he'll come here or he'll die there. [2360] A,nd if he doesn't exist...

[2361] Pause.

Clov

[2362] You don't believe me? [2363] You think I'm making it up romancing inventing.?

[2364] Pause.

Hamm

[2365] It's the end, Clov, we've come to the end. [2366] I don't need you any more.

[2367] Pause.

Clov

[2368] Lucky for you. You're in luck. Lucky for you.

[2369] He goes towards door.

Hamm

[2370] Leave me the gaff.

[2371] Clov gives him the gaff, goes towards door, halts, looks at alar-mèclock, takes it down, looks round for a better place to put it, goes to bins, puts it on lid of Nagg's bin. [2372] Pause.

[p. 40r]

Clov

[2373] I'mll leave you.

[2374] He goes towards door.

Hamm

[2375] Before you go...(Clov halts hear door)...say something.

Clov

[2376] There's nothing to say.

Hamm

[2377] A few wotrds...that I can ponder...in my heart.

Clov

[2378] Your heart!

Hamm

[2379] Yes. [2380] (Pause. [2381] Forcibly.) [2382] Yes! [2383] (Pause.) [2384] With the rest, in the end, the shadows, the murmurs, all the trouble, to endup with. [2385] (Pause.) [2386] Clov...[2387](Pause.) [2388] He never spoke to me. [2389] Then in the end, before he went, without my having asked him, he spoke to me. [2390] He said...

Clov

[2391] (despairing). [2392] Ah...!

Hamm

[2393] Something...from your heart.

Clov

[2394] My heart!

Hamm

[2395] A few words...from your heart.

[2395|001] Pause.

Clov

[2396] (sings).

[2399] Enough?

Hamm

[2400] (bitterly). [2401] A spit!

[2402] Pause.

Clov

[2403] (fixed gaze, tonelessly). [2404] They said to me, That's love, yes, yes, not a doubt, now you see how -

Hamm

[2405] Articulate!

Clov

[2406] (as before). [2407] How easy simple easy it is. [2408] They said to me, That's friendship, yes, yes, no question, you've found it. [2409] They said to me, Here's the place, stop, raise your head and look at all that spelendour loveliness. [2410] That order! [2411] They said to me, Come now, you're not a brute beast, think these things over and you'll see how all becomes clear. [2412] And simple! [2413] They said to me, What skilled attention they get, all these wounded unto death! dying of their wounds.
